DJ says victory not entertainment is all that matters tomorrow when his beloved South Coogee Wanderers head west of Anzac Parade for a date with some unknown team from Balmain.
Club Whip DJ said the club was keen to take the next step in its development by winning its one and only game this season. He said “We’ll have to beat this bunch of losers at Patron Saint Stadium to maintain our unbeaten record”.
He said: "I don't care if we play absolutely crap and win. I think in general, if you are talking the Wanderers and the growth of the Wanderers, attractive football is part of it. But no club wants to be playing attractive football and losing games. The argument with the Wanderers years ago was that they sent out great eloquent, and even hilarious, emails but the first two years we didn't even play against an opposition."
However if the Wanderers get a chance to do their natural pre-game, mid-game and post-game analysis they will.
DJ said: "We have sent some attacking emails out before the game, but that's not to say we are going to go all out.
"We are certainly not going to sit back and write bland emails, that’s not Borella’s style – cryptic’s his style, it's not the game Wazza plays, he is all up for a mid-game email discussing how that through ball was really meant to go the other direction but somehow a bird off to the left caught his eye and then he slightly misjudged the time it would take before the other player got close to tackle him………………………….(edited for length considerations), look, it's not the game we are comfortable playing alright."
The Wanderers know beating the Balmain boys won't be an easy task. The Inner West side will be looking to lift their own performances while their secret coach Cardinal is keen to put his own forgettable week - changing his young child’s nappies - behind him.
Wanderers have the wood over all other teams they have played, especially Western based ones so DJ isn't concerned.
He said: "Our record is not too bad. We've been once to the Inner West and won so the location holds no fears for us.
"Hopefully we've still got that confidence to carry through from the last 5 years."
Meanwhile Wanderers goalkeeper Comrade Shilin said shutting down Wazzadonna and PM mid game analysis was the key to success for him. “How can I set a wall when those two are blabbering on about whether we should more troops to Iraq?”
"We have to be wary of that, and we'll go through a talking session tonight and yum cha tomorrow to get all the talk out before the game”.
